Dojo Kun: Line 1, Character

Hitotsu! Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto.
Seek Perfection of Character.
(To strive for the perfection of character.)

There are many ways to improve one's character and Karate is most probably not even on many peoples lists of ways in which to do this. But, is this really what the words are trying to say or even suggest; that by the repeated performance of our Art  we can become better people. I do view Karate as an art and not as a means by which we can go out into the world and feel comfortable, protected and reassured. Moreover, I would suggest that this first line of our code of conduct is the basis for all  to abide by. Tolerance, humility and caring for others are traits that will bring harmony to all and make the world a better place in which to live in. The knowledge we gain through our art, for some, places them in a position of power and as already stated, with knowledge comes great responsibility.

These are some simple thoughts and are meant to promote further discussion. I do not pretend to know any answers to reach the true enlightened path but I would like to hear what others feel and more importantly have to say, because only by listening can we truly begin to understand what we are able to achieve.

Should you feel inclined please feel free to submit your thoughts for inclusion on our discussion board.
